Hey ACPG readers. I have a blog and recently posted about the recent changes in the NE poker scene. Part of the post included a map of the current poker locations available in the area (with a focus on the NY gambler) and the new poker rooms that will open up in PA, DE, MD, and OH. Once you get a look at the map, you can see why AC may be facing a serious attrition issue.
If you want to see the post, which includes links to the maps, it is called The Crowded Atlantic and is located athttp://www.highonpoker.com/2010/02/the-crowded-atlantic.html. There have already been a few comments and other posts on other blogs in reaction, so hopefully, you'll find it a worthy read as well. Enjoy!

Hi H.O.P.,
Checked out the map in this link.....and discovered something that looks way off.....Mt. Airy, PA ? I think there must be another Mt. Airy other than the one on the map, unless there are plans to build a casino in the middle of nowhere.....as shown. The ONLY thing anywhere near that location is Ski Roundtop, which is just off of Mt. Airy Rd. This is a mere 5 minutes from my location, so I know there's nothing there.....so it just struck me as odd that it would show up on a poker map....

| Mt. Airy, Pa is in the Poconos, North East part of Pennsylvania. Mt. Airy Rd is in Central Pa - I think there is a problem with finding the casino @ Mt. Airy on google maps, I've searched for it before myself. |

| Thanks, guys. I've updated it. I wonder why Mt. Airy is not on the map. |

Just wanted to put my two cents in on this topic. Granted, I live 15 min away from AC, play poker in AC and work as a poker deal at the Showboat so this may come off as a bit biased but here goes.
Once PA gets their table games up and running, there are several things to consider. In no particular order, here they are.
Game selection, if you don't like your local casino's card room, you're still gonna have to drive to another casino, in some cases it might be 45 min to an hour.
Rake or time game. Atlantic City's rake is $4 and $1 for the BBJ in all 1/2nl games. With no local competition, I wouldn't be surprised if they charged double what AC charges.
Smoking poker room. Thank god AC poker rooms are smoke free.
Small poker rooms equal long waits.
Rooms/restaurants/shows/shopping and amenities. Granted if you live a few minutes away, you probably don't care about staying over night but having an option is always nice.
I'm sure AC will take a hit but I'm confident it's not the end of AC. With that being said, Several years ago I lived in a suburb of Chicago and had 4 casino's (3 with poker rooms) all with in 20-30 minute drive from my house. We also had East Chicago which had about 4 river boats that were bunched together all with poker but an hours drive without traffic (I always drove to East Chicago for the following reasons). The problems with my local poker rooms were all of the above. One place charged a $12 rake on a 1/2nl game, another was a smoking room and they all had long waiting list just to get on the table. Once you got on, you had to deal with the regulars who played daily, not easy money at all.
With that being said, I think AC will take it's biggest hit during the week but not on weekends. We will still be a destination spot for vacationers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, fine dinning and weekend getaways. |

Another thought to Mike T's post: Not EVERYONE on this board, nor everyone who plays at the AC casinos, is from Pa. And if you are, you're in for a rude awakening if you think the poker tables there will serve as a legitimate and cost-effective alternative to AC.
Personally, even though I'm from Mass., I'd rather play in AC as opposed to Ct. for poker because there is much more variety in terms of games and tournaments - MUCH more.
Yes, Foxwoods may have the biggest poker room on the east coast, and Mohegan Sun is 1 of the 5 best rooms on the east coast, but AC still has 2 of the best/biggest rooms, the variety of games/tourneys is unrivaled, and the Ct. casinos limit their cash game offerings because not many players tend to play non-hold em games.
I also agree with Mike, you may THINK that a poker room closer to you will save $$ in the long run, but the rake that smaller rooms charge is absolutely ridiculous compared to a regular casino, and they severely lack game variety. If you're a higher-limit cash game player or a serious tournament player, trust me, you're in for a big disappointment.
In New Hampshire, the room 35 minutes from me is OK at best, but the rake sucks, the cash games are limited to 1-2 LIMIT, and the state does not allow them to spread NL games. And the tournaments are a joke, regardless of what they do to the structure.
How about Florida? My friend just returned from a vacation, and he told me the Hard Rock Seminole poker room runs a 5-10 NL game, but you're only allowed a $100 MAX buy-in. Talk about all-in or fold ...
In a nutshell, AC poker will survive this speed bump, and those who try the PA rooms closer to them will find out that aren't worth it.

| Although I am from NJ I am only 45 minutes away from a PA casino as opposed to 2+hours from AC. That said I agree with both Mike and Scooter on this. I think AC will see the biggest drop off during the week. Most people from north Jersey will take a quick trip to get their poker fix. ("honey I am just going out for milk be back in a little bit") I also think that those same people will still make AC their weekend/overnight destination. Unless PA comes up with some type of really sweet deals AC will survive this as you say "speed bump" |

If the rooms (or roped areas, g-d forbid) are put in as an after thought they will alienate people who want to "try it out" and it will only be a burp in the attendance for AC rooms.
Nonetheless there will be a host of people who live too close to make the trip to AC. Will it be a chunk of AC's main client mass, I'm not sure. |
